Job Title: Mechanical Assembler
Job Description

The Mechanical Assembler supports the development and verification of medical diagnostic devices by assembling precision biosensor disposables, executing test plans, collecting and analyzing data, and maintaining laboratory and test equipment. This role combines hands-on mechanical assembly with basic laboratory work, contributing directly to product testing, pilot studies, and design verification activities in a regulated environment.

Responsibilities

  • Create test plans, test procedures, and test reports to support development studies and formal design verification activities.
  • Formulate and assemble reagent-based biosensor disposable components to support internal product testing and external pilot studies.
  • Perform data collection using whole blood samples and quality controls, ensuring accurate and reliable measurements.
  • Analyze collected data using common statistical methods and summarize findings clearly.
  • Interface with the database system to update records, improve data accumulation, and ensure data integrity.
  • Implement laboratory upgrades and perform general day-to-day lab upkeep to maintain an efficient and organized workspace.
  • Ensure safe laboratory practices and maintain good laboratory practices (GLP) at all times.
  • Provide preliminary interpretation of test results and present clear and concise conclusions to team members.
  • Conduct verification testing on mechanical, chemical, and electronic components following written and/or verbal instructions from senior team members.
  • Design and construct test fixtures and setups to support design verification activities.
  • Diagnose product problems using a methodical and structured approach and clearly communicate findings to the team.
  • Maintain complex test equipment, including scheduling and tracking calibration and preventative maintenance.
  • Organize appointments with phlebotomy organizations in coordination with testing activities and communicate with study subjects in compliance with IRB practices.
  • Provide regular status reports on assigned tasks and communicate progress, issues, and timelines to the team.
  • Follow detailed work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and travelers during assembly and testing activities.
Essential Skills
  • Proven ability to perform manual assembly of small, precision components.
  • Experience with layer-by-layer mechanical assembly of disposable diagnostic cartridges or cassettes.
  • Comfortable using tweezers, small hand tools, and calipers for precision assembly work.
  • Ability to read and work from blueprints and mechanical schematics.
  • Ability to use hand tools safely and effectively in a production and test environment.
  • Strong organization skills to manage tasks, documentation, and equipment upkeep.
  • Ability to follow detailed work instructions, SOPs, and travelers accurately and consistently.
  • Basic understanding of GMP and regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Experience assembling medical devices, diagnostics, or consumable components.
  • Ability to perform data collection and basic data analysis using common statistical methods.
  • Comfort interfacing with database systems to input, update, and manage test and production data.
  • Capability to diagnose product problems using a logical and methodical approach.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to present results and status updates clearly.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience working with reagent-based biosensor disposables or similar consumable products.
  • Familiarity with verification testing of mechanical, chemical, and electronic components.
  • Experience designing or constructing simple test fixtures and test setups.
  • Exposure to good laboratory practices (GLP) and safe lab operations.
  • Comfort working with whole blood samples and quality control materials in a controlled environment.
  • Familiarity with IRB practices and working within ethical and regulatory guidelines for subject communication.
  • Interest in medical device and diagnostics manufacturing and a desire to build a long-term career in this industry.
  • Ability to work effectively within a small, collaborative team and support multiple tasks as needed.

Work Environment

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of South San Francisco, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $35.00/hr.
